A Letter From Rory Mullan

Arthur D. Tripp Ambassadorial Scholar

2003-2004

I hope this finds you and all within District 7300 keeping well. It has been one year since I left the United States and I therefore thought it an appropriate time to correspond with my friends in Pittsburgh. The last twelve months have passed so quickly, my wonderful memories of my time spent with you seem like only yesterday.

Since I returned home to Ireland last summer, life has been busy yet enjoyable. I recently completed my Masters in Political Science and will graduate this coming September upon submission of my thesis at the end of the summer.

Throughout the past year I have worked for my fathers construction company and also carried out some part-time project work for a public affairs company in Belfast.

I can report that Rotary is alive and well in Ireland. I have continued my involvement with my sponsor club, Limarady, addressed several meetings and helped coordinate Youth Exchange programs within the Rotary District of Ireland (1160)

In July I am traveling to Nicaragua, Central America, for 18 days to work on a project with the charity ‘Habitat For Humanity’ to construct homes for the poor. Limarady Rotary Club has contributed to my fundraising efforts, and I am very grateful to them for their generosity.

In early October 2005 I will travel to Zambia in Africa to do aid work for one year with an Irish charity called ‘Friends of Africa’. International development is something I have been interested in for a long time and I feel very fortunate that I have the support from my family and the opportunity to work in the field in Zambia.

My brief in Zambia will include working in an AIDS centre, a children’s street shelter as well as working on construction and farming projects and teaching basic English. I feel this will be a tremendous personal experience and fascinating bridge between the academia of International Politics and the reality of its affects on the ground in a third world country.

I maintain regular contact with the very special Mary Alice Tripp and my good friend Don Arnheim. Together they keep me up to date with Life in Pittsburgh and Rotary, so I will be watching with interest to hopefully see the Steelers make 2006 their year!

I forward my congratulations to Jon Maurer on his year in office, and I hope that all those traveling to Chicago for the Centenary Convention have a wonderful time at the very special occasion for Rotary.

To all the clubs and Rotarians I met throughout the District, I wish you every success as you begin a new Rotary year. And finally to Mary Alice, without whom I would not have met any of you, I thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for me. I toast your continued health and happiness from afar, and hope to see you all again in the not too distant future.

Go raibh mile maith agat,

Kindest Regards,

Rory Mullan
